Mounting the Shaft Extension

Overview

A shaft extension can be mounted to either side of the two end blocks and used for example to couple an external encoder.

Prerequisites

You need the following tools to mount a shaft extension:

oSoft-faced hammer

oTorque wrench with a set of hexagon sockets

For suitable parts, refer to Replacement Equipment and Accessories.

Procedure Overview

Perform the following steps at both ends of the carriage and at both ends of the axis to mount the shaft extension:

oPreparing the mounting of the shaft extension

oMounting the shaft extension

Preparing the Mounting of the Shaft Extension

Clean all parts.

Inspect all parts for damage.

NOTICE

UNINTENDED EQUIPMENT OPERATION

oReplace any damaged parts immediately.

oClean all parts before assembly and use.

Failure to follow these instructions can result in equipment damage.

Mounting the Shaft Extension

Fit the shaft extension (1) into the hollow shaft of the toothed belt pulley (2). Verify that there is no clearance between the shaft extension and the toothed belt pulley such that the surfaces are flush.

NOTE: To completely fit the shaft extension, you may have to tap the shaft extension at the last 2 mm (0.079 in) slightly with a soft-faced hammer (not on the screw head).

Tighten the screw (3) of the shaft extension.

Tightening torque:

oFor PAS41: 2.9 Nm (25.7 lbf-in)

oFor PAS42: 10 Nm (89 lbf-in)

oFor PAS43: 25 Nm (221 lbf-in)

oFor PAS44: 49 Nm (434 lbf-in)

NOTE: As long as the toothed belt is installed correctly and the carriage is at the end position, the toothed belt pulley does not rotate further. For detailed information about toothed belt installation, refer to Mounting the Toothed Belt.
