Connecting to an ION device over Ethernet

You can connect to your ION device for the first time and to an existing device over Ethernet.

Connecting to a device for the first time over Ethernet

To connect to a device for the first time over Ethernet:

  1. On the Home screen, select Connect to devices.
  2. Under How would you like to connect:
    1. Select Ethernet Network.
    2. (Optional) Enable Gateway.
    3. (Optional) Enter the Unit ID.
  3. Under Connection settings:
    1. Enter the device IP Address in New IP.
    2. Enter the Port number.
    3. Select the Protocol.

      Note: When Automatic is selected, the application will attempt a connection using Secure ION. If the connection using Secure ION is unsuccessful, the application will attempt a connection using Classic ION.

      Note: When connecting using Classic ION, the password is sent to the device using plain text (unencrypted).

  4. Select Connect.
  5. Enter the device credentials, and then select Authenticate.

    If a certificate notification appears, review the message, and then confirm the connection if you trust the certificate.

  6. Select Create Project With The Device.
  7. After the project is created, select Open project.

Connecting to an existing device over Ethernet

To connect to an existing device over Ethernet:

  1. On the Home screen, select the device's Project and Site.
  2. Open the device table of contents.
  3. Go to the toolbar, and then select Connect.
  4. Under How would you like to connect:
    1. Select Ethernet Network.
    2. (Optional) Enable Gateway.
    3. (Optional) Enter the Unit ID.
  5. Under Connection settings:
    1. Enter the device IP Address in New IP.
    2. Enter the Port number.
    3. Select the Protocol.

      Note: When Automatic is selected, the application will attempt to make a connection using Secure ION. If the connection using Secure ION is unsuccessful, the application will attempt to make a connection using Classic ION.

      Note: When connecting using Classic ION, the password is sent to the device using plain text (unencrypted).

      Tip: To connect using the previous IP address, port, and protocol, select Use last IP.

  6. Select Connect.
  7. Enter the device credentials, and then select Authenticate.

    If a certificate notification appears, review the message, and then confirm the connection if you trust the certificate.

  8. Review the connection comparison and then select OK.

    Note: When there are detected differences, review them, and then select Associate.

    Tip: Compare the information between the connected device and the local device to confirm you are connected to the correct device.
