Strategies for Changing the Existing SCADAPack x70 Configuration
This topic summarizes the main strategies for updating your SCADAPack x70 configuration, including ensuring that the configuration remains synchronized between Geo SCADA Expert and the SCADAPack x70 device.
Regardless of which strategy you use, always remember to first ensure that the application or device in which you are about to make your configuration changes does contain the full currently up-to-date configuration. This is important, to ensure that the updates that you are about to make to that configuration, including to any SCADAPack x70 logic, do not cause any unexpected configuration changes or other issues when that configuration is next downloaded or uploaded.
This procedure assumes that you have an existing system in which Geo SCADA Expert is already set up for configuring a SCADAPack x70 device. However, you want to change the existing SCADAPack x70 configuration (other than the SCADAPack x70 logic, which can only be changed using RemoteConnect).
This strategy is particularly suitable if, in Geo SCADA Expert, the existing SCADAPack x70 configuration has been set up to take advantage of Geo SCADA Expert's Group Templates and Group Instances feature.
Perform the following:
-
Ensure that your Geo SCADA Expert database contains the full currently up-to-date configuration. (If the database is not up to date, use the Upload Configuration pick action to upload the current configuration from the SCADAPack x70 device into the Geo SCADA Expert database.)
-
In Geo SCADA Expert, make the required changes to the SCADAPack x70 configuration.
If you are using the Group Templates and Group Instances feature and the SCADAPack x70 devices do not use SCADAPack x70 logic, consider whether the changes are:
-
Generic (and so should be made in the relevant Group Template)
-
Specific to that particular SCADAPack x70 device (so should be made in the relevant Group Instance).
-
-
Use the Download Configuration pick action to download the changes to the SCADAPack x70 device.
This procedure assumes that you have an existing system in which Geo SCADA Expert is already set up for configuring a SCADAPack x70 device. However, you want to make changes to the SCADAPack x70 logic that is used by that SCADAPack x70 device. To change the SCADAPack x70 logic, you have to use RemoteConnect.
Perform the following:
-
In Geo SCADA Expert, use the Export to RemoteConnect pick action to export the existing configuration to RemoteConnect, in the form of an .rtz file.
-
Start the RemoteConnect application and create a project with the same device type as the SCADAPack x70 device itself and as per the SCADAPack x70 Device Configuration item that exists in Geo SCADA Expert.
-
On the RemoteConnect offline Logic page, use the Advanced section Import button to import the .rtz file into RemoteConnect.
-
In RemoteConnect, make the required changes to the SCADAPack x70 logic. For more information, see the documentation provided with the SCADAPack RemoteConnect software.
-
In RemoteConnect, export the updated configuration (including the SCADAPack x70 logic), ready for importing into Geo SCADA Expert (see Export Configuration from RemoteConnect Ready for Importing into Geo SCADA Expert). The export process stores the configuration and SCADAPack x70 logic in an .rtz file, ready for importing into Geo SCADA Expert.
-
In Geo SCADA Expert, use the Import from RemoteConnect pick action to import the updated configuration and SCADAPack x70 logic application into the database.
-
In Geo SCADA Expert, use the Download Configuration pick action to download the updated configuration from Geo SCADA Expert to the SCADAPack x70 device.
This procedure assumes that you have an existing system in which Geo SCADA Expert is already set up for configuring a SCADAPack x70 device. The procedure also requires that you are using a common superset configuration that is shared by multiple devices (see Strategies for Setting Up the Initial SCADAPack x70 Configuration).
Perform the following:
-
Locate the required RemoteConnect project that you have previously saved (see Strategies for Setting Up the Initial SCADAPack x70 Configuration).
A RemoteConnect project file has a .prj extension. A good naming convention should help you to locate the relevant file. -
Open the project in RemoteConnect.
-
In RemoteConnect, make the required changes to the SCADAPack x70 logic and common configuration, and then save the project. For more information, see the documentation provided with the SCADAPack RemoteConnect software.
- In RemoteConnect, export the updated configuration (including the SCADAPack x70 logic), ready for importing into Geo SCADA Expert (see Export Configuration from RemoteConnect Ready for Importing into Geo SCADA Expert). The export process stores the configuration and SCADAPack x70 logic in an .rtz file, ready for importing into Geo SCADA Expert.
-
Perform just one of the following sets of steps (whichever one applies to your system setup):
If you are using a Group Template with the SCADAPack x70 device and its logic application shared across all Group Instances (that is, the device's DocumentContent property is not overridden):
- In Geo SCADA Expert, locate the first SCADAPack x70 device in the Group Template.
- Use the Import from RemoteConnect pick action with Update Only (Merge) mode. This will automatically update the common configuration and logic in each Group Instance of the Group Template, without creating any extra database items.
- With each Group Instance of the Group Template, use the Download Configuration pick action to download the new configuration and logic to the SCADAPack x70 device.
If you are not using a Group Template with the SCADAPack x70 device and its logic application shared across all Group Instances:
- In Geo SCADA Expert, locate the first SCADAPack x70 device that includes the common configuration that you want to update.
- Use the Import from RemoteConnect pick action with Update Only (Merge) mode. This will update the common configuration and logic without creating any extra database items.
- Use the Download Configuration pick action to download the configuration to the SCADAPack x70 device.
- Repeat steps ii and iii for each SCADAPack x70 device that shares the common configuration.
You can use RemoteConnect to change the configuration (including any SCADAPack x70 logic) of a SCADAPack x70 device in the field, or remotely. This procedure assumes that you have an existing system in which Geo SCADA Expert is already set up for configuring the SCADAPack x70 device. You can use this procedure as an alternative to performing either of the above procedures.
Perform the following:
-
Connect the computer that is running RemoteConnect to the SCADAPack x70 device.
-
Start RemoteConnect.
-
Read the project from the SCADAPack x70 device into RemoteConnect.
-
In RemoteConnect, make the required changes to the configuration (including, if applicable, the SCADAPack x70 logic). For more information, see the documentation provided with the SCADAPack RemoteConnect software.
-
Write the updated configuration to the SCADAPack x70 device.
-
Use the Upload Configuration pick action to upload the updated configuration into Geo SCADA Expert.
