Installation of the Online Help

By default, the online help is installed both on the Geo SCADA Expert server and locally on each ViewX client. In the Installation Wizard, these installations are represented by the Server Side Help component in the Server branch and the ViewX Help component in the ViewX Client branch respectively. You can access the components if you opt to install a Custom Setup.

When the online help is installed on both the servers and ViewX clients:

  • If you display the online help on a ViewX client, by default Geo SCADA Expert accesses that online help locally, from its installation on that client machine.

  • If you display the online help from the Server Configuration Tool, or the Server Status Tool, by default Geo SCADA Expert accesses that online help locally, from its installation on that server machine.

We would usually expect all of the servers and clients across a system to be running the same version and build of Geo SCADA Expert. In which case, the online help will be the same on all of the clients and servers.

During a system upgrade, there might be times when the servers have been upgraded but the clients have not, resulting in the servers and clients temporarily running different builds. In such a situation, the local version of online help on the clients might not be synchronized with updated server-based Geo SCADA Expert database items. If this situation is likely to exist for some time and users require the more up-to-date help about the database items that exists on the upgraded servers, you can set the clients to Use Server Based Help. You set this on a per client basis. Once the clients have been upgraded, you would typically turn this setting off again, so that Geo SCADA Expert then accesses the help locally from the client machines. For information about this setting, see Miscellaneous Options for ViewX Clients.

You can run Geo SCADA Expert on remote desktop setups (see Geo SCADA Expert on Citrix and Remote Desktop Services). On such a setup, each client might require multiple users to share a common set of help files. You can specify the location at which the help files are unpacked on such a client so that the online help can be shared between users (see Specify a Different Location for the Online Help).
